SERVICES
Art + Architecture Integration
In the early stages of planning a new building or public space we are frequently engaged to develop and implement an art program integral to the design and culture of the site. Working with institutional leadership the focus may be either on researching and acquiring extant works, or on commissioning new works and installations that address a specific context. In the case of new commissions, our office organizes and guides an artist-selection process, and then monitors and manages the budget, logistics, fabrication, and installation of these initiatives.
We have worked closely with a number of notable institutions and public agencies on multi-year projects. These have included the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, with artists Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra and Joel Shapiro to create permanent installations integral to the visitors’ experience; Battery Park City Authority to develop five distinct urban spaces along the Hudson River – each defined by an artist working closely with engineers and landscape architects; the New York Public Library to curate and guide a permanent art installation for the 85-foot ceiling at the heart of their main circulating branch on Fifth Avenue; and a number of art initiatives for the Johns Hopkins University across their academic and medical campuses in Baltimore and Washington D.C.
In collaboration with archeologists, exhibition designers and governing agencies, we were tasked by Bloomberg L.P. with the challenge of reconstructing and contextualizing the ruins of an ancient Roman Mithraeum. This ultimately resulted in a 3-story cultural hub showcasing the ruins the 3rd century A.D. temple, a selection of more than 600 Roman artifacts found during the excavation of the company’s London headquarters, and an on-going series of contemporary art commissions that respond to this significant archaeological site. Free and open to the public, Bloomberg Space – London Mithraeum has welcomed more than 500,000 visitors since it opened at the end of 2017.
Curatorial Services + Collection Management
Our office has a long history of working with clients seriously motivated to acquire and maintain works of art, with an emphasis on curatorial quality and integrity. This generally entails:
- Maintaining a regular schedule of visits to museums and galleries
- Working with clients to establish curatorial goals and guidelines
- Selectively tracking and attending art fairs and auctions
- Identifying and researching prospective acquisitions
- Managing the logistics of acquiring, installing, and maintaining works of art
- Consulting with fine arts conservators to assess the condition of specific works and to arrange for either limited or ongoing treatment, as may be appropriate
- Making recommendations with respect to works of art that clients already own
We encourage our clients to make their collections accessible to scholars and curators, and we regularly oversee loans to museums.
